I’ve been prone to anxiety as far back as I can remember. Through the years I’ve learned to manage my anxiety with meditation, supplements ( B-Complex + Magnesium specifically), limiting caffeine.
When I do have caffeine, I prefer to drink matcha because it has of about half the caffeine of coffee and is noticeably less stimulating.
What is matcha? It’s a ceremonial Japanese tea made from the highest quality green tea leaves and ground into a fine powder. Traditionally it’s dissolved in hot water and whisked to a froth. Like regular green tea, matcha also contains potent antioxidants and is believed to have a long list of health benefits.
Eventually, I learned about reishi and started adding it in with the matcha, helping to balance the stimulating effects of the caffeine.
What is reishi? It’s a super mushroom full of antioxidants and powerful healing qualities. It’s considered an adaptogen because it adapts to individual needs of the person taking it. Among a long list of health benefits, reishi is believed to help support the immune system and promote a calm centeredness. You can read more about the healing properties HERE, HERE and HERE.
REISHI MATCHA LATTE ( serves 1)
1/4 cup steaming hot water
3/4 cup steamed + frothed almond milk
1 teaspoon matcha powder (I buy this brand from Whole Foods)
1/2 teaspoon reishi powder
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)
a whisk (I use this whisk)
a milk steamer and frother (I use the older version of this Nespresso frother but you can simply heat the milk in the microwave or on the stove)
a mug to serve it in
first measure and place the reishi, matcha, vanilla extract and maple syrup into your mug
next, add about 1/4 cup hot water and whisk the ingredients until combined and frothy
lastly, add the frothed milk on top, give it a quick stir and enjoy
Note: If you don’t have a milk frother it’s no big deal, you can just warm the milk and add it in. Also for a similar froth, heat the milk in the microwave and add it to a blender.
As a note, I always take a vitamin C supplement along with the latte because it helps boost the effectiveness of the herb.
