Back in 2009 before barre classes were available in every city across the country, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the newly released Physique 57 DVDs. I faithfully followed celebrity fitness trends and was always on the hunt for new workout DVDs. Kelly Ripa (along with her perfect arms) was a Physique devotee, and that was all the assurance I needed.
I’d used the DVDs countless times over the years and have always loved the workouts because they’re fun, effective and low-impact. I love that the workouts are challenging, yet they don’t completely zap every ounce of my energy.
As a lover of home workouts, I recently subscribed to the Physique 57 On Demand program for 3 months and I thought I’d share a quick review of my experience.
What is it? It’s basically barre (ballet and Pilates-inspired exercise) with a fast-paced, fun, creative twist.
- $57 monthly (no commitment)
- $30 monthly with a 3 month commitment
- $5 daily
The Program: When you log in, you are presented with a wide variety of workout options ranging from 10-57 minutes. Some of the classes are full-body while others are focused on specific areas of the body. There is the ability to create and save mash-ups by combining a few workouts into one back-to-back routine. The interface is very user friendly and has worked seamlessly for me.
What to expect:
- infectiously happy and motivating inscructors
- upbeat background music
- using a chair as a “barre”
- some workouts require light weights ranging from 2-8 lbs
- lots of pulsing, lunging, planking and burning
- did I say burning? because it really does burn
- dripping sweat, even though you wouldnt expect it
Results: I am a firm believer that no amount of exercise can make up for our food choices when it comes to seeing results. However, I will say that Physique 57 firms that back of my legs and reduces cellulite better than any other workout I’ve ever done. Also, my core feels noticeably stronger when I do these workouts regularly. Actually, my entire body feels stronger in a way that weight training alone does not provide.
Overall: I love the ability to take a wide range of fitness classes in the comfort of my own home as well as while traveling. It’s easy to use, reliable (I never had a single frozen screen) and a great workout.
